Youth INNOVATION Centres

Jamaica's Youth Information Centres are being rebranded as

Youth INNOVATION Centres!

OVERVIEW

Youth Information Centres have existed in Jamaica since 2003 as a support structure for youth in information dissemination, engagement and participation. These spaces have been rebranded as Youth Innovation Centres, towards placing a greater focus on positive youth development, resilience, and harnessing the talents and creative potential of youth for sustainable livelihoods.

Youth Innovation Centres will target some of Jamaica’s most-at-risk youth populations. A suite of programmes and services will be implemented in the YICs that focus on building resilience, enhancing employability and positioning YIC users for wealth creation. YIC users will gain exposure to new and emerging technologies, while building competencies in web development, mobile application development, robotics and animation.

YICs offer a suite of programmes and services that are free of cost to the end user, utilise new and emerging technologies and seek to connect youth with labour market opportunities.  Sports and arts form a central feature of YICs and will also form a basis for income generation, collaborative learning and personal development.

Programmes and services in Youth Innovation Centres will facilitate the start-up of viable and sustainable youth enterprises, particularly in the ICT and creative industries. The new-look YICs are further aimed at building youth competencies to secure and retain employment.
