The Learning for Life Training Programme has been coordinated and implemented in Jamaica since 2008. The programme has been designed for the at risk youth population that are otherwise not formally engaged and in education and training. The training provides a professional and hands on experience in Bartending and Mixology; Food and Beverage Preparation. Further the training is geared towards skills development, qualification and provision of employment opportunities in the Hospitality Industry, locally and internationally.

To date over 5000 youth have been trained and there are plans now afoot to train an additional 2000 youth between March-July 2013.

The NCYD has been approached a second time by the Bars to Go Training Institute to partner with them so as to make this training a success. Four hundred (400) youth will be mobilized for training and certification in the following parishes:

  1. Portland
  2. St.James
  3. Manchester
  4. Kingston
  5. St.Ann

The training will operate for a period of nine (9) weeks and they are grouped in two batches (A and B). It is expected that at the end of each training batch 1000 youth will be trained; 500 for Bartending and Mixology and 500 for Food and Beverage Preparation. The trainings for Group A will commence in the following parishes on the stipulated dates:


  1. Portland-March 4, 2013
  2. Manchester-March 6, 2013
  3. Kingston-March 8, 2013
  4. St.James-March 15, 2013
  5. St.Ann-March 16, 2013

Group B will commence in May 2013 and the projected completion date is week of July 5, 2013.
Upon completion of training all participants will be certified by HEART/NTA and a formal graduation ceremony will be coordinated in honour of all the participants.
