Japanese Government Scholarships Now Open

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of the Government of Japan offers scholarships to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities.To date, some 92,000 students from approximately 160 countries and regions around the world have studied in Japan under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship program established in 1954.

This year, Undergraduate Student Scholarship and College of Tehnology Student Scholarship have become available for Jamaican citizens for the first time.

1. Research (Graduate) Student Scholarship
2. Undergraduate Student Scholarship
3. College of Technology Student Scholarship

 

Research (Graduate) Students

This scholarship is open to students from Jamaica to undertake research or a graduate degree in Japan.

Applicants must have been born on or after 2 April 1979. Applicants must have either an undergraduate degree, or the same or a higher level of academic ability as that of a university or college graduate. The term of scholarship is either 18 months or two years (including 6 months of Japanese language studies), however, the scholarship may be extended to complete a Master's or Doctor's degree. The area of study must be the same field that the applicant has studied or a related field.

Deadline for applications is June 7, 2013.

 

Undergraduate Students

This scholarship is open to students from Jamaica to undertake an undergraduate degree in Japan.
Applicants must have been born between 2 April 1992 and 1 April 1997, and must have completed 12 years of school education by March 2014, or have completed courses in a school comparable to a high school. A five-year scholarship is offered, including the first year in Japanese language training, beginning in April 2014. For those majoring in medicine or dentistry the term of scholarship is seven years, including the first year in Japanese language training. Applicants must major in 1) Social Sciences and Humanities or 2) Natural Sciences.

College of Technology Students

This scholarship is open to students from Jamaica to undertake a degree at a technical college in Japan.

Applicants must have been born between 2 April 1992 and 1 April 1997 and have completed school education comparable to a high school (a minimum of 11 years beginning in primary school) education (includes prospective graduates). A four-year scholarship is offered, including the first year in Japanese language training, beginning in April 2014. For scholarship awardees majoring in maritime engineering, the terms of scholarship will be four and a half years. Applicants must major in one of the following fields: 1) Mechanical Engineering; 2) Electrical and Electronic Engineering; 3) Information, Communication and Network Engineering; 4) Materials Engineering; 5) Architecture and Civil Engineering; 6) Maritime engineering; 7) Other Fields.
