The PM Awards was started in 1998 as part of the Values and Attitudes Programme of the then government. After a 3-year hiatus, the Awards was restarted last year as a means of recognising and saluting youth (aged 15-24) who have distinguished themselves in various sectors.

Young persons can be nominated in any of eleven (11) award categories: Arts and Culture, Agriculture and Agroprocessing, Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise, Leadership, Nation Building, Journalism and E-Journalism, Sports, Academics, International Achievement, Innovation in Science and Technology and Environmental Protection. Nominations are open to all Jamaican nationals between 15-29 who are living in Jamaica and the Diaspora, and who have attained excellence and world class achievement in the listed categories.

Additionally, there is a Youth Work Award, which is open to individuals and organisations who have been involved in youth development work for a minimum period of five years.
