Against the background of an increase in reports of domestic violence in the parish, the Portland YIC hosted an empowerment session on domestic violence on January 20, 2017. The session was hosted under the theme: “Safer Cities and Communities for Women and Girls”.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force facilitated the session, and also provided follow-up counselling to participants. In exploring the concept of domestic violence, the participants explored the various manifestations of intimate partner violence. Additionally, the group examined current laws that deal with the abuse of women and children.

Through the interactive session, participants shared recommendations for addressing incidences of domestic violence in the home.
