The National Centre for Youth Development (NCYD) hosted a Students' Council Workshop at the Brimmervale High School on February 28, 2013. The Workshop was coordinated by Youth Empowerment Officer for St. Mary - Mr. Omar Marston, and was aimed at capacity building for the students' councils in the parish.

Students' Council Representatives from six (6) of St. Mary's High Schools were present at the Workshop. Mr. Kevon Campbell, Programme Development Specialist at the NCYD, led the participants through a session on the responsibilities of students' councillors. The day's second session was faciliated by Mr. Hewitt, Children's Officer with the Child Development Agency, who provided information on child rights and child protection. Ms. Odette McKerny from the St. Mary Health Department faciliated the third session, which focussed on sexual and reproductive health.

Prime Minister's Youth Awardee, Mr. Edward Marshall Case, delivered a stirring presentation to the students' councillors, as he sought to use his own life experiences to motivate the gathering. Case, who is currently 24yrs old and is the founder of E3Designs and Construction, encouraged the councillors to set goals and remember that "success is a journey, not a destination".

Mr. Marston noted that he intends to coordinate other Workshops in the parish, in his drive to foster youth empowerment in St. Mary. He operates from the St. Mary Youth Information Centre, which is located at 5 Hodgson Street, Port Maria, St. Mary.
